Service Offering

Smith Tool is a world leader in the manufacture and sales of roller cone drilling bits. These bits have two major components, the body and the cones. The cones can contain either milled teeth or tungsten carbide inserts (TCI). The milled tooth bits have teeth machined into each of the cones, while the TCI bits have tungsten carbide inserts pressed into the cones. Certain bits have a polycrystalline diamond coating on the insert.

GeoDiamond is also a world leader in building and supplying diamond drill bits. These bits consist of a body made of either a matrix alloy or steel. The cutting structure consists of either polycrystalline diamond cutters which are braised into the bit or natural or synthetic diamonds which are impregnated in the bit. Both Smith Tool and GeoDiamond carry on significant R & D programs to further enhance the performance of their bits through advances in engineering design, and materials research.

Smith Technologies has engineers located in oil and gas company offices around the world. These specialist Advanced Service Engineers work as a part to the operator’s drilling team to provide the best drill bit solutions for specific wells that the customer is planning to drill. These individuals are charged with providing unbiased recommendations to the customer, with the uncompromising goal of lowering the overall cost per foot to drill each well.

i-DRILL™ 4-D modeling predicts a drilling system’s performance and behavior using extreme computing power, finite element analysis and lab derived rock mechanics. Finally there is a unique approach that allows a complete drilling system analysis instead of the common practice used in the past of assuming bit effect factors. i-DRILL provides clients with the opportunity to eliminate the costly exercise of learning through trial and error.
